Chapada dos Veadeiros: Alto Paraíso or São Jorge?
Choose a base for your actual park and waterfall days, not a generic Chapada pin.

Short answer
Start with the trip, not the postcard
São Jorge is the village of the national park visitor entrance. Alto Paraíso is a separate town base for a wider regional itinerary. Choose the trails and activities first, then compare road travel, meals and your return from the exact accommodation. Cavalcante may deserve its own leg; it is not simply another neighbourhood of either base.

The places to compare
01
São Jorge
- Best fit
- A stay led by days at the national park entrance.
- Trade-off
- Other regional waterfalls can require separate road trips.
- Move smart
- Check the park's current ticket, trail rules and your room-to-entrance journey.
02
Alto Paraíso
- Best fit
- A town base for a mix of regional activities and services.
- Trade-off
- The national park entrance is in São Jorge, not central Alto Paraíso.
- Move smart
- Put each chosen trail and return drive on the daily plan.
03
Cavalcante as another leg
- Best fit
- Activities specifically located around Cavalcante.
- Trade-off
- It changes the trip geography and adds another transfer or room move.
- Move smart
- Book it only when a named activity justifies a distinct stay.
Separate the park from the wider region
ICMBio locates the national park visitor address at São Jorge, within Alto Paraíso de Goiás municipality. A room in Alto Paraíso town and one in São Jorge therefore solve different daily journeys even though both may be marketed as Chapada stays.
Start with the trails you actually want to walk and check the current park access. A waterfall outside the national park has its own operator, entrance and rules; the park's visitor page does not certify that separate outing.
Choose a single base or a real second chapter
São Jorge can reduce the repeated approach to the park entrance. Alto Paraíso may fit a mixed itinerary, meals and services. Neither is universally best once your exact attraction list and driving arrangements are considered.
ICMBio's 2024 concession report records 96,927 national-park visitors. That counts this park, not all Chapada visitors, hotel nights or bookings. Use it as evidence of park use while checking current trail and road conditions for your dates.
Decision rules
Use these to break a tie
- Name the trails before choosing a town.
- Treat the park entrance and regional attractions as different places.
- Count road time and daylight for each return.
Before you book
Three checks
- Check ICMBio park access and current trail conditions.
- Confirm the exact operator, road and meeting point for off-park activities.
- Compare lodging and activity cancellation for weather changes.
Useful questions
What travellers usually need to know
Is the park entrance in Alto Paraíso town?
No. ICMBio gives the visitor address at Vila de São Jorge in the Alto Paraíso municipality; the municipality name is not the hotel location.
Should I add Cavalcante to a short stay?
Only if a chosen activity there earns the extra road journey or room change. Do not infer access from a generic Chapada map.
