Short answer

Start with the trip, not the postcard

Barreirinhas is the most established starting base for several circuits; Santo Amaro puts another side of the lagoons at the centre of the trip; Atins adds a coastal village stay. These are different gateways, not interchangeable hotel districts. Confirm the transfer and the accredited park activity before booking the room.

Base finder

The places to compare

01

Barreirinhas

Best fit
A first park visit with several departure options and a town base.
Trade-off
Tours still require authorized transport into the park.
Move smart
Match the pousada to the operator's actual pickup and your onward transfer.

02

Santo Amaro do Maranhão

Best fit
A lagoon-focused itinerary using the western gateway.
Trade-off
It needs its own transfer and a check of the exact circuit you want.
Move smart
Choose the lagoon circuit first, then a property and accredited operator.

03

Atins

Best fit
A slower coastal village chapter alongside the park.
Trade-off
It adds an onward leg and may be awkward for a very short visit.
Move smart
Confirm how you arrive, where bags are dropped and how you leave before booking.

Choose the gateway, then the bed

ICMBio names Barreirinhas and Santo Amaro as principal access towns and explains that the park is remote and protected. Atins is a village in the Barreirinhas municipality with a different coastal rhythm. A search for a generic Lençóis hotel can hide a long extra transfer.

Write down your arrival point, desired circuit, guide or vehicle operator, and departure day before selecting a pousada. A room with a lagoon photograph does not establish access to that lagoon, a pickup at the door or a trip running on your dates.

Respect the park's operating rules

The park is open across the year, while lagoon conditions and the experience change with rain and the season. ICMBio requires accredited transport and visitor-conduct services for regulated activities and does not allow private vehicles on the dune field.

The Maranhão tourism observatory reported 15,511 park visitors in February 2026 across Barreirinhas and Santo Amaro, versus 11,770 in February 2025. Those are park visits in one month, not hotel nights, search demand or a forecast for your booking date.

Decision rules

Use these to break a tie

  1. Treat each gateway as its own itinerary, not a hotel area within one town.
  2. For a short trip, one strong base usually leaves more time in the park.
  3. Add Atins only when the coastal-village stay is itself a reason to go.

Before you book

Three checks

  • Check current ICMBio park rules and accredited transport or guides.
  • Confirm the full transfer from São Luís or another arrival point.
  • Ask the operator about current lagoon conditions and the precise circuit for your dates.

Useful questions

What travellers usually need to know

Can I drive my own car through the dunes?

ICMBio states that private visitor vehicles are not permitted inside the park; use authorized services and check the current rules.

Do all three bases fit in a short stay?

Usually that creates more transfers than park time. Choose the circuit you care about most before adding a second base.
